My son was getting ready to leave for work this morning and he said the raccoons are out. I went into the kitchen and looked out the window and there was momma coon and 3 babies. Pretty soon here came 2 more babies from behind the garage. Those 5 babies were into everything they came across. I see why the poppa coon ran away from home. I went out the back door and they all took off scattered to the wind! But they were funny to watch as long as they didn't destroy anything.

Raccoons are so cute to watch! Too bad they are so destructive!

It must have been great to watch the family of coons but I don't know that I'd like them rootling about in my garden. Pity you didn't have your camera to hand CK as I'd love to have seen them.

They will be around again, I'll try to get a couple of shots of them.

A friend of mine has a cat door that is often used by the neighborhood racoons. They come in to eat the catfood while the cats sit on the counter and watch. He had to start keeping his bread in the microwave. He tried a breadbox, but they just opened it. He woke up one night (about 1:00 in the morning) and found one sitting in the hallway watching him sleep. He decided he didn't want to sleep with a wild animal roaming the house so he tried using a broom to force it down the stairs and back outside. He had it halfway down the stairs when one of the cats decided to go upstairs. The cat left going down and the racoon took off for the upstairs. He finally found it hiding under the headboard of his waterbed. It took a while to evict the racoon from its newfound racoon house, but after an hour or so he was finally able to go back to sleep. The next morning he asked his son (18 or 19 at the time) if he heard the commotion and his son had heard the whole thing. When he asked why he didn't offer to help, his son said that it sounded like everything was under control and he wasn't needed. The cat door is still there and is still being used by cats and racoons alike. None of the racoons have ventured upstairs lately.
