I have several China girl/boy hollies that are in my recently inherited garden. When should I prune them? They are close to the house, and I don't want them to get out of hand...one of them is already looking a little leggy in the top. Any tips are helpful.

I prune all my hollies back anytime during spring, summer or autumn and it doesn't do them any harm at all Keborda.
I have several types of Holly bushes and even a small Holly tree and they get trimmed a lot!! Hollies are very primitive and slow growing plants so don't be afraid to trim them hard if you have to. I had to move a couple of my Holly bushes a few years back. I trimmed them almost down to their main stems and then moved them. The Hollies came back as if nothing important happened to them. People use holly as hedging around here too and cut it back just like privet or boxus.

Chinese Holly has incredibly sharp points on it's leaves and can go thru the soles of some shoes with ease. Wear something very protective when working on it.
