Certify your yard as a wildlife habitat.

It's not hard. If you have water, mature trees/bushes and food then you are well on your way. Certifying your yard is not only fun but a great way to make people aware of wildlife conservation.

I learned about this about a month ago and I went to the website (http://www.nwf.org/backyard/) to see what kind of accommodations I would need to make in order to have my yard certified. I was surprised to learn that my yard was already certifiable! The kids in my neighborhood love to come by and watch the ducks, turtles, fish and other animals that scurry thru. People see my sign and are surprised (I live in a pretty busy neighborhood) and it helps convey environmental awareness.

Wow, that's really amazing. This is probably not something that i can get to happening living downtown, but I'm going to remember that later on in life!

actually, since the downtown you are in is Seattle, you might look into it anyway- the website offers some really creative ways to provide food, water, and shelter. If you have even a little deck, you can fill it with potted plants and such, and isn't it a bank building where those two hawks were spotted nesting? Hey, we live in a really huge nature preserve here, what with a rain forest, mountains and mountain ranges, glacial-outwash prairies and such, lol!
