Has anyone made things from gourds? I grew some bushel gourds(actually several kinds) last year and am making a hanging lamp from one. They also make neat hanging planters for draping plants. Will post pic's soon. I have given away a lot of gourds and still have many left I need ideas for.

OK..lol should have done a search but didn't think of it. Found older posts with great ideas. Now I will go post in seed exchange that I have sooo many gourd seeds to trade. Forgot when I did seed exchange about them. Too late this year probably but good for next. Also growing more. I love the vines too.

DF, check out this topic that Bethie posted back in January. She and her husband do a lot of gourd painting.

Thanks toni,
That's the one I found when I posted. It came up on the little list at the bottom of related posts.

Here is a gourd I decorated.....

I wood-burned the pine cone and needle design and the edge has pine needles around it...I've got another I've planned to burn in a fall leaves design, but I've missplaced my wood burner Mr. Green .

I like using them for decorative bowls and baskets. I am trying to grow some but I never have much success.

Wow HB, looking good Mr. Green Did you burn the design from a template or just off the top of your head?

These are some nest egg gourds. Hubby woodburned them to look like bird eggs and I colorized them with Ukraniun egg dyes. I put the dye on with a q-tip and blended the colors right on the egg. These are powder that you mix with water and the colors can be custom mixed by you. They last at least six months in a jar with a lid. We have a good crop of these gourds on the vine right now. Very easy to grow. They are often painted for Christmas ornaments or Easter eggs. Very Happy

These are sprayed with sealer also. Cool

OMG, Bethie...you have no idea how much I love those! I really need to get some of those growing...egg gourds you say? I decorate my family room with very earthy things...leaves, and other nature inspired artwork...those would be perfect in here. I actually have some of the Ukranian egg dyes...can you believe it?

Frank, I did design it off the top of my head, but it was way easier than you might think. The wood burner came with a tip that was the perfect shape for the pinecone parts. I just stamped them in a pinecone formation...the needles are just lines....

Well, Bethie, you inspired me sooooo much that I just won an auction for egg gourds...now I really need to dig out my wood burner....do you have any other tips for these? Very Happy

Hi Anna,
I see that you live in Florida. There is a gourd show in Palatka, which is just over 2 hours from you. It's Feb 23-24.
It's a great place to get ideas, buy supplies and take classes. You can see what's available from the Florida Gourd society website. Just google it.

I have a gourd that I plan on making into a bird house. Paint the outside of course and hang in a tree for my little feathered friends.

We fixed two for the birds this summer and our Carolina wrens nested in one! Very Happy
