i purchased this plant as seeds 5 or six years ago and they have been happily reseeding themselves ever since. they grow to about 18" to 2' tall and all the flowers and also the seed pods develop on the stem. any help identifying will be greatly appreciated

Kind of hard to tell from your pictures, but I'm going to suggest that it could be Balsam.

Yes, I think that is Balsam. (Impatiens Balsamina)

I agree Netty. And it does reseed like mad. I found 2 in the middle of the yard on the other side of my property from where it is growing.

The one known in Britain as 'Policeman's Helmet' is a real problem along our river banks and canals. It is displacing many of our native species. It is a terribly ramapnt spreader by seed. That one is Impatiens glandulifera though.

 thanks everyone.....i've been slowly pulling it out all summer, putting some of it elsewhere and throwing the rest on the old train track hill across the street. it is pretty invasive, but makes a nice filler for spots that need covering.
