I'm so excited! I have my very first hummingbirds! My husband was the first to spot them. As soon as he told me he saw a hummer, I bought hummingbird nectar (without the red dye...I did my homework)and hung up the feeder. They came that day. They did not seem very scared of me...just curious. I counted 4 at the feeder. Here's some photos. My camera kept fogging up because of the heat and humidity. I'll try to get more soon. Yippey! Can you tell I'm excited. What a wonderful ending to a rough day at work.

Thanks! We lived here for 2 years and I never knew they lived near us. I can only guess that it is my new found love of gardening that made them come out and say hello to us. I'm sure the flowers helped.
How often should I change the nectar? It's the concentrated with hibicus instead of red dye? Should I put out another feeder since there are at least 4 maybe more hummers?

Oh Daph what wonderfukl piccies of your hummingbirds!! If I had those little fellows in my garden I'd be out there all day. Isn't it fantastic what gardeners can attract to the outdoor spaces just by planting different flowers and plants?

Way to go Daph! Not only did you get your first Hummingbirds, but you also managed to get some great pictures of them! I'm still trying to get a good shot.

I feel very fortunate that I have a good variety of wildlife. Having the wetlands behind us and a pond right by us helps! Plus an endless supply for birdfood

Below is a fellow who decided to take a walk in the back yard. I'm not sure what he is...he was looking for frogs and lizards.

Well, I think that looks like a heron, but I'm no good at American wildlife I'm afraid. He's lovely to look at, though.

I'm no wildlife expert either but yes I think it's a heron. Have a look at the blue heron photo posted by Eileen here:

Yes, I think you two are correct. It's a heron. I've never seen one with spots until we moved here. Thanks!
Eileen has a great eye for wildlife photos.

Here's two more photos.
The below is a bird that decided to watch the sunset in the pecan tree.

Cattle Heron at the pond

This one landed in the pecan tree. I was poking around in the mulch bed when I heard rustling leaves and cracking limbs. He was having a hard time balancing.

I have lots of photos that I need to resize before I post. Foxes, hawks, dragonflies, icky spiders, gators, turtles, and lots of other native animals.

Daph your photograph is indeed a heron but it's a youngster that still has to come into its adult plumage. Or there might just have been a bit of cross mating between a heron and an egret. Wink Wink LOL
