Those caterpillars appear to be Monarch caterpillars. Are all the color bands smooth? If so, they are Monarchs. Little yellow dots on the black bands would be Black Swallowtail caterpillars.

Looks as though you're going to have a butterfly invasion shortly. You must take more piccies when they are fluttering around your garden.

I never crush a caterpillar, because I want more butterflies. Wish that I had some of yours, Gizmo.

We have alot of the Monarchs flying around here. We have a few other ones but I have no idea what they are. I'll post some butterfly pic.

Excellent year for Monarch's here too Gizmo. I still have loads of milkweed around here.
I've even been sharing my plants with other caterpillars this year. I've got a bunch of Painted Lady caterpillars and also some Hornworms. I used to freak out when I saw them on my plants, but I think that some certain Butterfly loving stew members are rubbing off on me...

Glorious Monarchs! My milkweed is mostly stumps now too. Hopefully it will get a little break so it can rejuvenate some. It is a HUGE butterfly year here. Do you notice how "twitchy" the monarch caterpillars are?

That's strange u mentioned that Bethie I noticed a change in them too. Figured it was because there was so many and not enough to eat. Twitchy is a understatement there more then just nervous & jittery. They are down right mean to each other.
