I haven't a clue where to post this -

One of the odd interests I have on the side is Tolkien's works, and so a friend sent me a link to this brief article - (I couldn't believe this - but now I want one...no, I want both! LOL!)

--
HOBBIT AND GOLLUM JADE PLANTS

Hobbit and Gollum aren’t just from Middle Earth. They’re also dwarf jade plants. Both stand on their tip-toes at about 2 to 3 feet, but Hobbit has tubular leaves that curl back and a trunk that thickens with age. Gollum has an added feature: tubular leaves with suction cup-like tips at the ends - perfect for grabbing precious rings. Drought tolerant and hardy to 25 degrees, you won’t have to speak Elvish or travel to Mordor to grow these plants.

---

She found this note at the archives for the Garden Compass - Add some Red Hobbit columbine, some Blue Hobbit sea holly, a few Loth Lorien daffodils and you're well on your way to a Middle-earth garden. Very Happy

Have any of you also picked up 'themes' along the way that tie in with other interests? I remember someone doing a 'booze' garden with whiskey/rum/brandy named plants?

Prim, guess I will have to start searching for all of those plants too. I don't have a LOTR themed garden but have thought about it.

Also, it was me looking for plants with any kind of booze in the name. I have yet to find one that can be planted in the Jose Cuervo pitcher I have tho.

I was going to design a Harry Potter garden for Lisa, but since they have sold their house and are now living in a townhome without a yard I won't be doing that for her. But I think next spring I will make her a potted garden for their balcony.

That's so awesome! The Hobbit and LOTR were my first "real books" growing up. There needs to be a white wizard plant!

I wonder how one would go about a Beatles themed garden?

"The Lord of the Rings" was my very first book in English. I bought it when I was 15, and have read it a lot of times since. I'd love to have a "Middle Earth"-corner.

lexxivexx - I'd use their song titles, starting with spring flowers from their first album and end it with Colchicum autumnale, with lots of summer flowers in between.

I'd start by including this plant Lexxi, have a look at the cultivar listed at the end of its name:

Have four of them in a row and call them John, Paul, George and Ringo respectively.

That's it, I have to start a Beatle theme next year! When I'm a fancy home-owner I'll top it off with a gently Weeping Willow.

I don't have a themed garden yet, but I plan on doing several. I want an angel garden, I have several angel statues and plan on adding more, so I want plants with angel in the name to go in it. I also want to do a fairy garden, one day I may have the time and money to accomplish these things.
