My husband loves hostas, just as I do, but he's crazy enough to go out and buy some without knowing where to put them. So, this summer we just had to get started on our long-planned hosta walk.

Clearing up the mess is my first task:

Aaaargh! Weed!

Due to poor earth, I put some Rodgersia in this corner:

I've still got a long way to go:

It's beginning to look like something now:

The end, at last!

From this:

to this:

And all done in a week-end.

Now all I have to do, is get started on the northern side, and make a proper path where all that lawn is.

Great transformation Droopy, thanks for taking the time to post the step by step progress for us. Had you considered any other possible options before this or was it hostas all the way that were destined to take up the valuable real estate?

All in just ONE weekend??
I bow humbly before you!
It looks great already, and it'll only get better when it's had time to mature a bit.

What a great job Droopy. I can hardly believe you achieved all that in just one week-end. Shocked

Thank you all!

Since we decided to use a ground cover cloth, we didn't need to remove all the turf. I measured out every plant's space, cut a hole, dug away grass and top dirt, lined the hole with wet newspapers to prevent the grass growing back up, filled it up with good earth and put the plant in.

Then we emptied twenty-something sacks of bark onto the cloth, spread it out and sat back to enjoy.

Most hostas are going to be BIG ones, and I'm really looking forward to seeing this in a couple of years.

Total length is about twenty metres.

Hostas all the way, Frank! Laughing

We've got som irises and bleeding hearts in there too, for variation. (Actually, due to lack of space, but it sounds too haphazard.)
