The redness associated with an eclipse is caused by our atmosphere, the same reason sunrises and sunsets appear red. The atmosphere acts like a lens, the blue light is scattered out, the red is bent into our shadow.
I have read that you shouldn't work with plants or soil for 12 hours before an eclipse and 6 hours after one. That means don't plant seeds, transplant, harvest, weed or do anything in the garden.

If you're in Hawaii I'm sure you see plenty of red moons... the solution is to hand the tourist a tube of sunscreen.

Summer has finally fried my brain
Here it is 24 hours after Primsong posted the comment about seeing plenty of red moons and giving the tourist sunscreen and I am just now 'getting it'.

Egad, thank you SO much for the mental image of a pudgy Hawaiian tourist in a thong with red cheeks *where's that "barfing" icon when ya need it?*
