Pounding headache, watery eyes, sore throat - yes the old head cold strikes again! I'm not a big fan of taking medication for something as small as a cold so I was wondering whether anyone had any natural remedies?

A tablespoon of whiskey in a cup of hot coffee and sugar. Drink enough of them and you won't care if you have a cold or not!

At the first sign of a cold, eat raw onion.

I start taking lots of Vitamin C and Echinacea to help boost my immune system at the early signs of a cold.
Garlic capsules or if you like garlic then eat several cloves a day, tea made from Lemom Balm, Licorice or Ginger and I hear Shiitake mushrooms have an antiviral ingredient too so eating them might help.
Like Netty says, eating a raw onion will provide some anti-viral fighters too. It is not as potent as garlic but if you like onions but not garlic then eat them.

Cocoa with cognac, and a small splash of coffee to bring the chocolate flavor out. Or mulled red wine with honey. Tea made from black-currant leaves, Sambucus nigra berries and/or flowers, lavender flowers and salvia leaves, sweetened with honey. Peppermint-tea will help unblock your nose.

Years ago my grandmother made onion tea and always kept oranges.I take vitamin -c daily winter and summer. She also would make hot toddies Whiskey, sugar or honey, lemon and add hot water .Then go to bed cover up and sweat it off.For Cough .... Rock candy
a drop or 2 of oil of peppermint, whiskey, lemon and enough hot water to melt the candy.
I haven't had a cold in a long time.
I have allergies and they act like colds but I start my allergy meds and it stops...

Boy, you should make this a sticky thread when you are feeling better. So sorry you're sick! I get really killer sore throats with colds, but since I started sucking zinc lozenges I just haven't had that happen.
I'd bet the cognac would take the edge off the achies anyway. O, and a friend who is a healthcare professional reccomends the Sambucus that Droopy mentioned, gave me a box of green tea with that in it. Hope you are feeling better soon, nothing worse than an unhappy gnome

I think I'll tackle a hot whiskey tonight, they have worked in the past. The raw onion suggestion is intriguing, must remember that one. Thanks guys

Hmmmm, sounds like you need an extra dose of Gnome Brew, Frank.
Perhaps I'll have some myself - strictly as a preventative measure, you understand.

We use zinc tabs and vitamin c plus low doses of aspirin here, plus hot tea with lemon and honey.
Hope you feel better soon!

Downed a hot whiskey last night and I haven't had a more comfortable night's sleep in a long time. And no headache upon waking up. Highly recommended.

Drink 10 more in quick succession and you will feel even better! If you feel anything at all!
