I live in South Dakota and the weatherman is predicting upper 30's the next couple of nights. Does it have to be freezing or below to do harm? I still have tomatoes, squash, peppers, and pumpkins. Do I need to cover everything? If so, how heavy and how thoroughly? Any advice would be appreciated.

None of the above mentioned will take below 40f (say 3 to 5 c.) without damage. You need to really wrap them up to keep them alive and it needs doing when they are still warm. We use either Fleece, if it is not too cold, and/or bubble wrap if it is going to be really cold. Hope they survive for you.

We've got two cold nights in September (40 and 42) here in Chicago. All my plants (tomato, papper, and eggplants) survived. According to weathercast, we'll get al least two warm weeks. Today is 84 and tommorow will be 89! A record high here.
