So, the babies have been out for a walk this morning, or rather, they tumbled out of the nest, but we were able to have a good look and BOY they are cute!! We think we have 7 babies, they are now furry, but still blind. Am planning to clean the nest out carefully today as they are ponging nicely and now they are out and about I think, so long as we do not touch the babies, it should be okay.
Does anyone here have experience of when they should be seperated from mum...the last thing we want are more babies!! 
I shall take some photos when we clean them to post.

Hi EJ,
The best time to seperate the babies from their mum is approx 28 days after they have been born. Do be careful when cleaning out the nest as mother hamsters have a tendency to eat their babies if they feel threatened or get stressed in any way. Maybe a good idea would be to clean the cage but leave at least some of the bedding from the nest with the babies after you've finished. That way their scent will still be in the nest and mum will accept them again more readily.

Well, the babies have been on walkabout tonight! Just as we were eating our tea, out they all came and clambered into the food bowl and started munching on the cereals. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CUTE! Still blind, and their ears are still flat down, altho defined, eating solids and lively. I think it is going to be a struggle to part with them eventually!

Not a great photograph, I am rubbish with the digital for some reason. Cleaned them out properly today as they were starting to STINK! Mum wasn't terribly impressed and when they all got back in the cage she cleaned them all one by one! They are now all tucked up again back in their bed - all 9 of them!!

Awww EJ, look at all of them there just pottering around. Are you sure they are not just rats in hamster costumes?  Where were the other two that were out of photo? I'd bet Mum has no free time for herself these days at all.

Well, 2 weeks after her litter have flown the coop and gone to the pet shop, she has done it again! Tonight we heard chirping, and when we delved gently into the bedding, there were another clutch of little pink baby hamsters! The kids will be thrilled. She seems to be a great mum, and again, at first glance it is another big litter! This will have to be her last though. I don't want to keep putting her through childbirth - we shall have to expand the cage so she can have her own quarters. Photos will follow once the babies are out and about!

Speaking of hamsters... our hamster had a bit of an adventure this morning. I heard him still running in his wheel like a maniac when I got up, so I popped him into his beloved hamster-ball to explore the house while I made breakfast.
We rolled up a fat rug to make a barrier for Boots so he wouldn't go down the stairs and after bumping off of it a few times, he managed to take a very determined run at it and get over it anyway...
Bumpbumpbumpbumpbumpbump...
Kids: "BOOTS!!!"
They said the poor little guy was sitting in his ball just quivering with poop all over the inside of the ball. We put him in his house with extra kleenex to play with and some broccoli.
Hopefully he won't associate his descent into the depths with the ball itself!

That must have been some run up. I guess he won't want to do that anytime again in a hurry.

Poor little fellow. I think I may just do the same thing if someone put me into a giant gnome ball and pushed me down of the pyramids in Egypt

I doubt if hamster memories are much longer that goldfish memories. I know it was traumatic, but the telling of the story is funny.

Ohhh, you are all making me want another hamster! I've never experienced hammie babies, but knowing how cute bunny babys are, I can just imagine!
