Cacti do need watering to grow, however, this time of year, little once in a while is best. I wait until the compost is totally dry then give them a little drink. However, as the weather starts to warm, I start to water more regularly and feed from time to time.

I think what I would do is stand the little pot in a saucer of water, leave it for an hour, then tip the water away. Do this about once a fortnight throughout the winter and spring, and as the temperature rises do it weekly. At least then the compost is aborbing what it can and not becoming cold and waterlogged.

Well, it accomplishes feeding. Without water the cacti will eventually die. The plant must be in some sort of compost or carrying material, which will absorb water. The roots of the cacti will then absorb what it needs through its roots. If you are worried about over watering the plant, then standing it in water periodically, and taking it out after an hour or so will allow the water that is needed to be drawn up into the compost. All plants need water, even cactus.

i heard that if you water them too often they will start to shrivel and once they do that it is too late!
