I have a basil plant that I bought in August I think, and it was nice and green, growing nicely. Then...the heat got to it, I thought it was about dead, but, it wasn't so I watered it, and it stayed with us. Then it was neglected after I had my baby. It's only been watered a few times since then. It's still alive though. But it has some dry stems, brown, but the leaves on it are green and alive. Is this normal, or is it about to die? It's an outside plant. And I'd bring it in, but....I don't want black widows which are living under the lip of the pot in my home!!
Is it dying off for winter? Or what?

I can try to post a picture if I can find the time..but I can't promise

If you live in north California it could be going dormant for the winter.

I think your biggest problem is the black widow spiders living on the pot, even outside you really don't want them around your house if you can prevent it. You certainly will not be able to take your little one outside to play. Take care of them and buy a new basil plant.

Yeah, the black widows are a problem here! Shocked We kill some every week!! I go outside at night to 'hunt them down with the raid'! Creepy things!
Well, I guess I'll throw that pot out then.

I'd trim it back, repot it, bring it in.

I just planted some new basil plants in a pot so I can have them over the winter.

Of course, it's in the 80's here right now. Rolling Eyes

yea I think it all depends on the temp and quality of the soil.
