Well not really skiing but swimming with their heads out of the water anyone know why this is?

In aquariums when fish are gasping at the surface it is from one of these problems..... O2 deficiency, CO2 excess, tank too hot, toxins, shock.
Not sure if the same applies to outdoor ponds too.

I would say it can easily apply to ponds too.

I have goldfish in my pond that are alway "cruising" the surface for food. My waterfall keeps the pond well-aerated (even in winter), and they've overwintered under the ice for 3 years now. Good luck, and Happy New Year!

Hi,
yes this really happens due to oxygen deficiency .this is applicable to all the water bodies .
sometimes oxygen level from the water body decline and there is no more supply of the Oxygen and this make water creature to come out or on the surface for oxygen.
This several ti mes happens due to the excessive growth of the insect or stagnant water .
