Saint Lucia buns

150 grams butter or margarine
5 dl milk
50 g yeast
1 gram saffron
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ dl sugar
1-2 eggs
flour

Melt the butter, add milk, heat to 37 deg C. Dissolve the yeast, add saffron, salt, sugar and eggs. Add enough flour for the dough to become firm but supple. Leave to raise to double size. Roll sausages and make figures or buns, leave to raise under plastic for about 30-40 minutes. Decorate with raisins, swab with egg, bake for about 10 minutes at 225-250 deg C.

If you make plaited bread, bake for 15-20 minutes at 200-225 deg C.

Raisins can also be added to the dough if you like it that way.

Ahhh droopy i see we been doing the same thing all day,,lol. very nice an tasty looking,, an the kids did an awesome job. What i want to know which girl wears the wreath,,,lol. or is that just a swedish thing,, i used to wear the wear the wreath with lit candles on christmas,,eeekkkk i can't believe my parents made me do that,,,lol.

Tell the girls they are hired to do my St. Lucia baking anytime. looks so good!!!! Very Happy

Believe me, they taste very good. I forgot to mention that I don't use real saffron, but turmeric, since saffron cost as much as gold per ounce, well... nearly as much. The buns get a lovely, golden colour.

Biita, they wear tinsel wreaths, both of them, and no candles, only the buns in a basket. I sent them next door to sing the song and deliver some buns. It's the first time in years I haven't attended a celebration in kindergarten. I had some withdrawal problems, but feel better now. Laughing

hahahaha i'm jealous,,, i want withdrawl problems,,, altho i did take some to uncle an he just looked at me, like waiting for me to sing,,,lol... i told him not in this lifetime. i don't sing at all... can't carry a tune to save my life at all.

Thanks for the recipe Droopy, my friend made some of these a few days ago and they were delicious! At the supermarket you have to ask the teller for the sachets of saffron from behind the checkout counter.

Oh, Biita, you ought to have brought a CD-player over, and played the tune for him.

Frank, I can understand them hiding the saffron. It's hideously expensive. The turmeric gives nearly the same, rich, golden colour, but without the cost.

Those look very delicious, Droopy. It really DOES make me want to eat one right this minute.
It is nice to learn the traditions that go along with the rolls.

Sjoerd, the shapes are called things like St.Lucy's cats, the Christmas pig, the golden carriage, Christmas bull, St.Lucy's crown, the bird, the lily and so on. I can never remember what's what, though. The crown is at the bottom on the second photo.

Lussekatte, 2 dots over the u. i don't have that letter on my keyboard. I used saffron only because its been here since i got here. its sealed in a little tin , an all wrapped up, so it is still good. To buy saffron up here at least you have to go to the pharmacy to get it. its not even sold in the stores. way to expensive. the tumeric is a great idea,, can i ask did it change the taste at all or was the amount so little it just colored and not flavored it.

Biita, you can make that letter, u with two dots (oemlaut)by holding the "alt button down and then (on your number block) type in 0252 then let the alt button go----

Alt+0252 = ü
Alt+ 0220 = Ü
