What a gorgeous, deep, rich color!!
That's my favorite kind of holiday gift,
something that you can have and enjoy for many years to come,
the bulb will just get larger and larger,
and eventually, it will produce pups.
I have some Amaryllis that I got about 15 years ago,
I grow them outside,
they bloom in the springtime.

It's a striking amaryllis, so dark with the white dots. Lovely!
I have only managed to bring an amaryllis back to life once, and now I tend to stay away from them.

That is a beautiful Amaryllis Barb. I've never had luck getting them to bloom a second time. I must be doing something wrong!

Hi B,
What a lovely amaryllis. You had better hold that one over. They aren't too difficult to do.
I had one that was pretty much that same colour last year...one type had short stems and the other had the "normal" long ones. The deep, rich red also almost seemed to have some blue or purple in it I imagined.
There is a place in Amsterdam, called "the Floating Flower Market" and you can find the most amazing sorts of cut flowers, inside and outside plants as well as an unbelievable selections of bulbs, etc. They are not all that expensive here so I don't always hold them, over. I held a couple over. I have them wrapped in newspaper now and will soon put them in a tad of coil ans water them and...just wait.
I really like that colour! I'm glad you posted this picture.

Barb, they are hardy in the ground down here, in zone 8,
but I don't expect that they would be, much further north of here.
Springtime is their natural blooming season,
the holiday plants now available in stores,
have been conditioned by the growers to bloom "off-cycle".
I grow most of my Amaryllis in large-ish communal pots,
so that I can place them in our courtyard,
and around the entry steps for spring flowering.
Just last weekend, I cut off all of the remaining foliage
and moved the pots into the basement stairwell
(which is covered by a roof, but otherwise exposed to our outdoor temperatures).
They will remain there, dormant until the weather warms enough to start them growing again.
When I see new growth, I'll bring them back up and begin to water and acclimate
them to more and more daylight gradually -
I have several varieties that bloom in succession,
so I usually have blooms from mid-march until sometime in May.
In colder climates, I think keeping them in a corner of the garage,
for winter dormancy would work, too.
. . . Now, forcing them to bloom in fall and winter,
would add a good deal more work to the project,
and I'm just too darned lazy to bother especially when
they are so readily available at this time of year,
and I can get new ones to add to my collection.

That is a gorgeous color. I read they're hardy in zone 8 or warmer zones. No outside growing for us up here.
Heres an informative how to site on amaryllis:
