Indoor Amaryllis + Low Sunlight + Fluorescents + Hydroponics

Hey guys, a while back I had a great amaryllis grow with some beautiful blooms.

I used a coco-coir and perlite medium with General Hydroponics nutrients. Most of the light came from a largely obstructed south facing window and a few compact fluorescents.

Has anyone else had success with hydroponic mediums and houseplants? It can be very difficult for a beginner horticulturist, but the plants are so vigorous, vibrant, and vivacious. The main problem I experienced was with measuring pH levels consistently. A good pH pen seems like it is essential, and mine broke a long time ago.

Although this grow was using a solid medium, I have also grown using a water culture system with an aquarium bubbler for oxygenation. I found that the measure of total dissolved solids was much less important than accurately assessing pH. A day of the plant sitting in water that's just a tenth or two off in pH levels will really block a lot of nutrient absorption.
