I've been spending all day in bed today due to a pretty nasty cold. I've had a hot whiskey or two which always helps but I was wondering what recipes / remedies others use? Thanks all!

Nothing fancy I'm afraid. I use cocoa with cognac or hot red wine with honey if I just want to get some sleep.

I also like to use tea from Sambucus nigra berries, chamomile, peppermint and salvia, sweetened with honey.

I'm told garlic is good too. You smear honey around your neck, split garlic cloves in two and put them around there as well, and then tie a thick woollen scarf around it all. I've never tried it because I've never been that desperate.

Get well soon!

Gosh Frank, I hope you didn't catch it from me!!
I have been a real mess since just after Christmas.
Confused This is what comes of letting visitors into one's home during cold and flu season.

I resorted to over-the-counter treatment for my symptoms,
achy joints, congested head and chest.
I'm just now beginning to think that life may be worth clinging to, after all.
Drink the extra-fortified Gnome brew, and feel better soon.

I take vitimin C at the onset of winter to try and keep the nasties away. I also make up hot lemon drinks made with real lemons and honey to sooth sore throats. I hope you're soon feeling back to your old self - nothing more miserable than having a cold or 'flu during the winter. Sad

Oh dear Frank...you didn't get sick again! Seems to me you got sick this time last year too.
Vitamin C, lots of rest and liquids, and it all else fails a good shot of Gnomebrew!

At the moment I'm treating myself with chicken soup, hot lemon tea with sugar and as much rest as I can take the time for. All my relatives are already on antibiotics. But if it is a viral infection instead of a bacterial one, that will do no good at all, naturally.
Good luck, Frank

I too take Vitamin C when I first notice symptoms, and it really helps. My Mom, of German descent, always gave me a mixture of hot ginger brandy/lemon/honey...that worked pretty good too!!!

well if you want to sweat this baby out an stink to high heaven i got the recipe for you,,lol. very simple, whole onion, whole garlic bulb, a few hot chilis, or horseradish root, an ginger. mix it all up in a huge gallon jug with hot water an vinager. let it sit for a day, then strain it out... drink if you dare, okay at least hold the nose, an drink 2-3 cups aday.. kills everything in one day,, an really does work. keep refridgerated.

Okay not that daring you say! yarrow, black current leaves, an birch leaves. yarrow kills everything, black current leaves have vitamin C, an birch leaves releave the aches an pains... drink as often as you like,,, making a hot tea out of the 3. the more the better but try not to go over 5 cups aday.

Frank, hope the cold is on the wane by now.

Biita, that first mixture sure should kill anything, some of those ingredients I use in a bug spray mix for the backyard Very Happy
But I do like the less daring one. I didn't know that about Yarrow. I need to add Yarrow, black currant leaves and birch leaves to my herbs.

Thanks for all the suggestions and well wishes, I'm feeling a bit better today. My appetite is back, was able to eat a full dinner today.

Biita your first recipe sounds like it could cure anything. I mean if something doesn't taste nice it must be good for you Very Happy

Glad to hear your feeling better. I'm hearing there's a nasty flu bug goin around. Keeping my fingers crossed that we don't get it here. A simple cold is all anyone has had so far. Get lots of rest and you'll feel better soon.
