Tomorrow is grandma's 90th birthday. There will be a big party where she lives. She's been looking forward to it for months. Unfortunately, she will miss it. This afternoon she broke her hip and is now in the hospital. My won says she is more upset over missing the party than with breaking her hip. (for the 3rd time in 3 years) dooley

That's awful dooley. My heart goes out to her. Especially since she was looking forward to it for months. I remember you mentioned her birthday a few days ago in your blog as well.

Tell her best wishes and get well soon,
Frank

Hi Dooley, Just a thought. Why don't you have a chat with the nurses at the hospital in the morning and explain about the party being cancelled. They may just allow you to have a small celebration in the ward in the afternoon or at night. I'm sure your grandma would love that.
Do pass on my regards and best wishes to her for her 90th birthday. I hope she makes a speedy recovery and isn't in too much pain.

I just talked to my son and nothing has been decided about doing surgery or if they can just do physical therapy. So, today grandma has had a lot of pain medication and wasn't up to a party of any kind. Tom and his cousin, Shelley spent the whole day with her. Tom's visit was a surprise. He lives in California. She knew Shelley was going to be there. Grandma lives in New York closer to Shelley than to us. We live close to 2,500 miles from her. I would have talked to her on the phone today. I talk to her most Sundays. Thank you for your good wishes and I will pass them on to her. Dooley

I'm sorry to hear that your grandma is in so much pain Dooley. What a way to have to spend your 90th birthday!!! Sad I didn't realise you lived so far away from her!!!! It must be such a worrying time for the whole family. Please keep us updated on her progress won't you?

Grandma will not have to have surgery. The final decision will be made tomorrow. (Monday) But, to do surgery they would have to take out the steel rod they put in her leg last year and they don't want to do it. so, they think they will send her to a rehabilation unit and prescribe bed rest for a period followed by physical therapy. It would be for 8 to 12 weeks. Since it wasn't a clear break, but a crack they are hoping by keeping her off of it for a period that it will heal itself. Then, Tom and Shelley(grandchildren) will find her a new apartment closer to Shelley. She is in an assisted living apartment so an aide found her and called the ambulance. New York is where she wants to live because it's where she was born. She definitely did not want to move to Arizona with us even if it is warmer. My parents lived here when we moved here. they have since passed away. So, I think things will be okay. I still have some birthday presents to send her. I bought several cards today that I will send every few days. One get well card and several thinking of you cards and cheery cards. I will get the rehab address tomorrow or Tuesday when I talk with Shelley. Tom had to go back to California. Dooley

That's good news dooley. Very happy to hear that she won't need surgery. I can understand her wanting to be in the place where she was born. I'm sure she will love the cards.

Thanks for the update on you grandma Dooley. Smile I'm glad she won't have to undergo surgery after all. I will keep my fingers crossed that the rest and physiotherapy help her to mend quickly. What a good idea of yours it was to buy those cards for her as it will let your grandma know you are always thinking of her. Very Happy

Take care.

I called the hospital in Geneva, N.Y. to get an address for Brian's mom. She was moved from the hospital to rehab today. They transferred the call to her room so I was able to talk with her. She sounded good. She says she is starting her physical therapy tomorrow. I told her a package would be on the way to her tomorrow. We bought paper, envelopes, stamps, tea, cookies and lotion. Also, a heart shaped box of candy for valentines's day. I'll send her the first of the cards that I bought. Only one is a get-well card, the others are just thinking of you or cheery cards. She will be there 8-10 weeks. I will be able to talk to her now that she is in rehab instead of the hospital. Dooley

I'm soooo glad you managed to have a talk with your grandma Dooley. Very Happy I'm sure your call will have cheered her up no end. She'll enjoy getting the cards you bought for her and she'll be delighted all the lovely gifts too.

Grandma is going to be getting out of rehab on Wednesday, but unfortunately she isn't going to go home to her apartment. Her hip healed only sort of. It's knit together but not strong enough for her to get around on it. she is moving to a care home close to her granddaughter, Shelley. Shelley and Tom will close her apartment and dispose or store things according to a list she gave them. She will be only a few minutes from Shelley and Shelley will be able to visit after work most days. Shelley is a good kid. Dooley

It's good to hear that your grandma is going to be near to Shelley and Tom so that they can visit her. Sorry to hear that her hip didn't heal well though. Sad Is she still in pain? I sincerely hope she isn't!!

Shelly does sound great Dooley. Grandma will love those visits. I really hope she loves the care home and doesn't miss her apartment too much
