We just moved into this new place as most of you know. It sits on the very edge of town. Theres a long grave lane you have to walk down to get to where we live. On three sides of us, are huge fields and behind us is a horse farm. A very country setting.

Well, I have three climbing roses, I just bought a tea rose and of course my fav, my mini rose (the flower gets no bigger then your thumb!) Well, to check the mail, you have to walk or drive down the grave lane to the box where the mail is. I was walking last night and I noticed these really thick thicket growing over the fence from the edge of the lane towards the field in front of my house. The more I looked, theres ,I would say about 20 of these plants.

They caught my eye because they have thousands of these black balls on the tips of the stems. I pulled one off and opened it and theres about 40 to 50 seeds inside.

The stems coming out of the ground are so thick! If you place your palms together and hold your thumbs pad to pad, they are thicker than that. And covered in these wickly looking thorns. And it has the classic 5 leaves. They match my rose leaves.

Im thinking a shurb rose but Ive never seen any kind of rose except for the tea, minis and climbing. How do I find out?

And are the seeds still good inside this late in the season?

Under the soil as I trimed my very outta control rose I found a yellow tag with the name John Cabot on it still on the base!!!!!! So I looked it up Very Happy

http://www.springvalleyroses.com/catalog/johncabot.html

It says it can be left untrained to form a large, arching shrub that will spread about 8-feet wide and get about 6-feet tall. Shocked No wonder I thought it was outta control!!!

OK With the help of another site that helps ID roses, I think, but not quite sure, that its a R. bracteata. I know I know...
If it walks like a duck
and looks like a duck
then it must be a duck.....

But what if it doesnt smell like one? HA!

This rose has a very faint scent to it where the R. bracteata is said to have a strong scent. Other than that, it looks to be the same rose in everyway. So Im stuck! HA

I live in the USA. Ive never tried the jams. I have to use poisons on my roses so I cant eat them. I have a case of nasty bugs here. I dont have much of a choice.

what about leaving one rose bush without poison. The bugs will eat some leaves but not all. just so you can make some jam once. Very nice and tangy. I know how it is - I could murder about 2 weeks ago when I found one of the large grasshoppers eating the last of my only Aloe melanacantha flowers. I needed that pollen.

Well the bug Im having trouble with is the Black Spotted Cucumber Beetle. Its eatting the rose buds not the leaves. If it were eatting just the leaves, I could deal with that. But its butering the rose buds before they even open.

not so bad, panty-hose will work. I have to use it too. In my case I have to keep the bees and other insects from pollinating. It does not look so good but also not too bad as the color is dull. Think about it. I am off to bed now 23:30 after a long weekend of "working" I surf only weekends and end up feeling worse than ever in my late-night weekend days way back when.
