All of a sudden today the fan on my brand new laptop suddenly decided it needed a voice. So now it is periodically annoying me with a loud, grinding sound. I have opened the laptop and taken the vacuum cleaner to the fan already to pick up any dust that may be there. It didn't work.

My bets is that it is the bearing/s within the fan that are to blame. If it starts getting loud a short sharp bang on the body of the laptop near the fan shuts it up again.

Tomorrow I will take a can of compressed air to it to eliminate for sure the possibility that it may be a bit of dust or dirt. It is still under warranty so ultimately I'm not worried about having to live with it indefinitely. The annoying thing is the laptop is not even 3 months old yet.

Fans are a nuisance sometimes. Good luck with finding and destroying the source of the grinding sound, Frank.

Frank,

Maybe it needs some lubrication. Some small motors have sealed bearings, and some don't. The unsealed bearings might quiet down with a drop of highly refined oil. But since it is in warranty maybe it is best left to the pro. Just a thought.Be careful not to oil the mother board, mothers don't do well when they get oiled.

Tom

Yes I had also thought about doing this Tom and I still may. Will keep you all updated.

Oh heck Frank I really hope you can find the source of your problem and that it turns out to be nothing serious. Shocked

Our convection oven does the same annoying thing...the fan sounds like it's going to fly across the kitchen somedays. Good thing for the warranty but it's always time-consuming to get a new computer just the way you like it.

And Frank it is quite anoying to be bugged by such a noise when one works, and it always seems as if teh fan can push out more decibels than the ear can bear.
You are probably like most of us here who will open up and check what is amiss or not working, but I have to agree with Glenda as we have that same setup with warantees and guarantees here.

Oh dear the problem is back and this time it's back with a vengeance! I have opened the laptop up and cleaned for dust again but to no avail. At this point I don't believe it is a problem with dirt in the fan, I believe it is because the fan itself is loose and spins off centre causing it to vibrate. Unfortunately this means a possible replacement unless I can find a new solution. I may even have to go back and use my old laptop as the sound is so irritating.
