Gee . . . I never put anything on my grilled cheese but cheese and bread . . . brushing the bread with butter . . . then frying it on both sides until it is crispy and browned pretty . . . then I heat a bowl of tomato soup, and pour a glass of cold milk to go with my grilled cheese . . . seems to me that if you add meat . . . it becomes something other than a grilled cheese Just call me the anal retentive girl who does not think outside the box very well.
PS Plus the fact that grilled cheese is one of my comfort foods .. .

SOJ, I am so glad to see that I am not the only purist when it comes to grilled cheese sandwiches. And tomato soup is a must, makes a great winter supper.

I usually add ham and tomatoes. Sometimes with crispy bacon…delicious.

best thing for me other than plain grilled cheese is a layer of Branston pickle then the grated cheese on top grilled yummy, also with a bowl of tomato soup it cant be beaten I think I now know what lunch is going to be!

My favorite grilled cheese sandwich has fontina cheese and proscuitto on homemade bread. Addictive!
