I'm a stay at home Mom, trying to homeschool my daughters. I wanted to add something different than just the basic studies to the curriculum, and I thought of sign language. I am so new to the topic that I thought I'd take the chance to ask and see if anyone is familiar with signing and what would be the best self taught method out there. Anyway, nothing about gardening here,  but just thought I'd ask! Hope you all are having a blessed weekend!

They have some great books for children at the library on sign language. Or look in the children's section at the book store for beginning sign language. I bought a cd of American Sign Language (ASL)not too long ago. I used to know a lot of it because I worked with deaf children in special education. I'd start with the children's books and I would begin with the alphabet along with them learning to recognize the letters. Begin with basic one sign words. You can learn along with them. Try to sign the word when you say it in your normal conversation. Words like you and me and yes and no, go and come. They are easy ones that people use without even knowing it's sign. I wish I had learned signing from my mom as her best friend was deaf when she was growing up.Heather has taught her babys to sign as she wanted to know what they wanted .Trey was very good at it .Logan tries really hard but isn't as good at it.

I think it's a wonderful idea!!! I have always wanted to learn to sign but just haven't gotten around to it. Our community college has classes occasionally but tends to be on the expensive side. I like Dooley's idea of checking books out at the library  The library could be a lesson all by itself. Our local library was closed due to funding issues. Sad Sad

Sometimes seeing someone signing will give you nuances that a book won't show you. There is a series of videos aimed at teaching preverbal infants useful signs and I highly recommend something like that to start- it shows little kids happily signing away and you can see alot of subtle things a book can't show. I had one I got off Amazon, and if you look there they will offer plenty of suggestions for other useful ones.
