We have a beautiful tree that starts with small red heart shaped leaves as the days get warmer the leaves turn a dark red then as the summer progresses the leaves turn green then in fall they turn brown and fall off. We love this tree but due to some new construction we must transplant it. If it does not survive we would like to replace it but we don't know what it is. We have heard Redbud but from Redbud pictures i don't think that is what we have. Anyone have any clues?
Redbud trees bloom in early spring with gorgeous reddish to deep pink blooms. It would help if you could show us a picture of your tree leaves and the tree, ID'ing without pictures is durned near impossible. How about posting an intro of yourself in the Welcome to GardenStew forum so we can get starting getting to know you. Welcome to the Stew by the way
Heart Shapped Leaves Unfortunately, it's the wrong time of year for pictures. Right now it's just limbs. There are now flowers on this tree just leaves.
Welcome first, It sure does sound like redbud to me to. They are just starting to bud up an some are starting to bloom here.
Hi Maryellen, Welcome! One other possibility that occurs to me is Cercidiphyllum japonicum ("Katsura Tree") Click here to see if the foliage resembles this. There are a number of named cultivars which have red foliage for at least part of the year, including C.J. "Red Fox", C.J. "Ruby" and C.J. "Raspberry".
If ZZP's tree is not yours try this one: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/32151/ Chinese Tallow Tree
Thank you for all your warm welcomes. I will take a picture of the bark tonight. (it doesn't appear to be any of the suggestions so far as there are no flowers on this tree, just leaves)
