I've got some Sweet William plants that I started from seed last year. This will be the first year that they flower and I was wondering if it's OK to divide the clumps up now as they're pretty compacted?

Sharon, I know your from the UK but I have bought (this year) sweet william seeds. Did you find them easy to grow from seed? I seem to be having problems with them not coming up. Any advice, maybe what you did last year?

They are: S.W. Aricula Eyed Mix. Looking at the packet they were from, a combined 'fragrance' collection, no special treatment; the barest of instructions, except for not covering with soil, sown between May-July? They went very well; looking forward to the flowers!

Sharon you can divide clumps of Sweet Williams in either autumn or spring. Try to make sure you split them before they put out too much new growth though. Hope this helps.

Petunia - I am also in zone 5 and have had great success with Sweet William from seed. I sowed them outdoors in the late fall.

I forgot to say that I started mine off indoors, in a seed tray before potting them on and then putting them outside in the boat.I think I may leave the dividing-up until next autumn.

I have seen today some of my sweet williams coming up (inside) finally. Guess I'm just not patient enough. Sometimes when I plant seeds, I would like to see them come up the next day or two. In reality I know that it'll take longer then that.
