I am new to the forum so bare with me while I learn my way around. I had trouble with my tomatoes last year in my small garden so this year I have them in pots. I used one part mushroom compost, I bought a bag of manure and humas mixed together and used one part of that, and one part miracle grow potting soil. I am afraid now that it may be too rich and burn the plants. They look go so far they have been in the pot for 4 days. Is this a good mixture to use or can someone lead me in the right direction to what mixture to use when planting in pots. I have had luck with the miricle grow potting soil alone but it seemed to dry out very quickly. Thanks inadvance for any help.

Tomatoes are very heavy feeders and have a strong root system. I do not think the soil will be too rich for them, especially if they seem to be doing good after four days. Glendann is from Texas and uses mushroom compost a lot, I am sure she will be along shortly with some great advise for you.

Hello and glad you joined our Stew.I am from Madisonville Tx.I have planted
into straight compost from Monterey Mushroom plant( I worked there until last Oct.I always got my compost and let it go through the winter rains but I have had great luck with tomatos .I've never added any other types of soil or manure as the compost has chicken manure, horse manure, peat moss, soy bean oil, straw, cotton seed meal, cotton seed hulls, calcium, and so much more. You don't need anything else with it.If its just come from the plant its really strong. It may not burn your tomatos.I found if you plant seed straight into the fresh compost they will come up and be ok but have had other plants burn if I planted the plants into it.I hope I've explain well enough of what I have experienced.I find you can almost see your plants grow in that stuff.

I have mine dumped on black plastic and let it drain off but the buckets would do the same .I have made top of ground beds on black plastic fill my
beds with the compost and plant seeds straight into the compost.Good luck.Get compost early in Feb. and put sprinkler on the pots would work just as well.
