Today we had a lot of bird action at the pergola...I picked out a long finch feeder for my birthday and a cover to help protect my oriole or hummingbird feeder. It is a large leaf shaped and so pretty. I don't have it out yet..I will wait for the weather is right for the orioles. I did put the large finch feeder out though. It has room for 20 finch at a time..they didn't even let it sit for a while, we came in the house and looked back outside and one was on it already. Birds are changing here..the juncos are gone and the red winged blackbirds are filling themselves up..

Here is a little sparrow with a housefinch...
We notice the Juncos when the weather gets cold, usually when we have the first snowfall is when you really notice them. Then when it starts to warm up they leave. They fly around with the other small birds, the sparrows, housefinches and the yellow housefinch. They make a very pleasant little sound and I just love them...it is hard to see their eyes when the head is black..usually they eat off of the ground but once in a while, I catch them on the tray. They do not hang on any of the feeders here at my pergola like the other small birds do.

We still have Junco's here, I guess they will leave soon too.

I've never seen or heard of a Junco before. What are their habits or behaviours Sherry? Cute little things.

Juncos are a part of the sparrow family. Also called snowbirds as they are around in winter and tend to fill up at the feeders when snow is coming. Also caled snowbird because their backs are dark gray like the sky during a storm, and white bellies like the snow on the ground. They are ground feeders, but will venture ono a feeder if all on the ground is covered in snow. They make a light sweet peeping sound when in groups.
Our redwings are coming home now too Sherry. Right along with their grackle and starling buddies.

Our blackbirds are just black too but with a lovely orangey yellow bill (male) and yellow eyes. The females are just brown.

My yard is full of the Redwing Blackbirds all winter and into the summer, they have a pretty song if you can pick them out from the others.
We don't have Junco's but do have about 13 million different kinds of Sparrows  Almost as many of them as there are Grackles.
