So we bought this house and the lawn is terrible, there appears to be two major things growing that I need to get rid of. I am pretty new to lawn care as this is my first house, please see pictures below. What can I do to get rid of these?

I think the only solution to your problems CC is to go to a local garden centre and ask them for a systemic weed killer. This type of weed killer kills weeds right down to the roots. Once the treatment is over with then I would leave the ground fallow for a few weeks and then re-seed with grass.
