It looks like a peony. I'd love to see the buds a little closer. They're perennials and die down in autumn to pop back to life the following spring. The older they get, the lovelier they become, in my opinion. I'm looking forward to the flower!

Not the best photographer I guess, LOL. This is the best I could get. Plus, apparently there's a giant anthill out there too. YUCK. There were ants all over it!

The bud's a bit fuzzy and the leaves are different from my peonies, so I'm not positive. Sorry.

Yup! I think it's a peony too  Ants love peonies but they don't hurt them. It sure looks like a big healthy plant!

It's a peony. The ants do like this plant and are suppose to work the bud for it to flower. The ants can only help this plant.

Wow, your crocus and daylily are right where mine are, but my peonies are only about 6" high, wonder what variety that one is? (ps, your kitty picture is just tooooo cute!!!!)

I think it's a peony too. I love them, they are sooooo beautiful when blooming. We'd love to see it in bloom. Enjoy!

It's a little exciting, seeing what I actually end up with.
And the kitten is one of four nearly identical kittens that I desperately need to find homes for. We took in their very pregnant mother right before she had them, and good thing, she had them the night we ended up with a six inch snowfall. We need to find her a home too, she's a beautiful (but VERY VOCAL) calico My poor black kitty is petrified of all of them and spends most of her days and nights on top of the hot water heater in the laundry room.

Yup, looks like a Peony to me too. You are lucky to have inherited such a large one too. Oh please do post a picture when the blooms open! Peony is my absolute favorite. The one in my avator I got from a friend who doesn't garden and she got it from her grandmother.

It is most definitely a peony, I have quite a few growing here in NY in my yard, they are just starting to sprout, it will be interesting to see what color blooms you end up with. I have planted some new ones this year, double red and double fusha. Let us know how they turn out...

I planted a Peony this year. It is coming up, but still very small. Should I expect blooms this year? I bought it for the beautiful flower and the fact that it is a perrinial.
