Emergency surgery!!

Category: rambling | Posted: Mon Mar 12, 2007 2:37 pm

I haven't been on here for a couple of weeks because of a very sick child.Hubby and I were awakened at 2:00 am on Wednesday morning,Feb. 28th by a screaming child and it wasn't the 6 month old it was the 8 year old! We were absolutely panic stricken. He was pale and started violently vomiting and holding his abdomen screaming it hurts. We called my mom who lives right across the street. She rushed over to keep an eye on our other children while we rushed to the ER. Well about an hour later we were in the waiting area while our son was undergoing an emergency appendectomy. His appendix had ruptured by the time we had arrived at the ER. We have never had anything happen like this before in our families and it was so scary. He had to have the open surgery instead of the laposcopic surgery since his appendix had burst, so he had to stay in the hospital for a few days and have IV antibotics administered. He was released a week ago today. He is still pretty sore and freaks anytime someone gets near him. Wednesday he will go for his 2 week check-up. He will find out if he will be able to return to school then.I've been picking up his school work each afternoon when I pick up our 6 year old. He is afraid he is going to have to have surgery also and has been having panic attacks. We have had to take him in for medication, the doctor said it is a type of post tramatic syndrome from seeing his brother go through so much. We give him the medication only if he feels panicy,it makes him very loopy and I don't like to give it to him. Luckily he has only needed it twice. Wow you don't realize how much something like this affects everyone!Thank goodness my mom lives right across the street and has been able to help us through all of this. I don't know how we would have made it without her!!! Well I guess I had better go for now.

Oh dear what a time you've been having and I thought you were busy playing in the garden too!!!! I hope your eight year old will soon be completely recovered from his op and can get back to school and to being fit and healthy again. You must have been scared witless when you heard him screaming. Neither wonder his brother is having panic attacks. Thank goodness you made it to the hospital in time.

Give him our love and tell him we think he's been very, very brave.

Wow, what an awful thing to go through. For everyone. Often a therapist can help with PTSD. My S.O. is an LCSW in private practice and works with children all the time. I usually only takes a few visits and all is OK. Donna takes insurance. Check around, you will probably find one in your area who does as well. Meds are rarely indicated in situational anxiety ESPECIALLY in children. Please check with a talk therapist.

I'm so sorry to hear you and everyone has had such a terrible time.I do hope your
son is able to go back to school soon.I would be worried about the drugs your younger one is taking.Thats very unusual for them to give such a small child meds lie that. My prayers are with you and yours.

Thank you Eileen! I will definately tell Zachary you think he is brave. He needs all the encouragement and well wishes he can get!
Pondlady thank you for the information! I will check into a talk therapist. I hate to give my children unnecessary medication and I don't feel that he needs this med!! My hubby's company provides very good insurance and it covers theraphy, so I will spend part of my day checking up on this! Oh and my Mom says she agrees with you too!lol

Thank you also Glendann. My mom and I also agree about the meds. Nathaniel's peditrician was on vacation and he saw a sub, I will also talk to his regular dr when he returns. Until then I will not be giving him the med anymore!

How awful GardenTroll, a burst appendix is supposed to be terribly painful. I think my mother went through the same thing when she was little. All the best wishes and recovery to your 8 year old.

It's absolutely terrifying when something like this happens to a child for both parents AND the child. I'm so glad he's OK.
And please tell Zachary I think he is brave too :)

Hi GT, Zachary sure is a brave boy, tell him for me too. I hope everything gets back to normal and he heals quickly. I know how scary a sick child is, we almost lost Sarah at 18 months old, it is a feeling I never want to experience again.

I'm so sorry to hear about all you have gone through in the last week or so.I would be freaking out if that happened to Trey. He got rotavirus when he was about 14 months and was almost admitted into the hospital for dehydration and I thought I wasn't going to handle it, but he pulled through before they could admit him. I hope your son has a speedy recovery and your youngest son starts getting better without the meds. It's gotta be scary giving meds like that to a younger child. Hopefully his regular doctor comes back soon and he doesn't have to have the meds anymore.

Aww, I'm so sorry that you and your family have had such a rough time.
A very traumatic experience, indeed!
Hoping that you are all starting to feel better, day by day.
