Planning A Cottage Garden

Category: Garden Novice | Posted: Mon Jul 14, 2008 5:44 pm

Well, since I can't do much as far as yard work, I've been planning a few garden spaces. The grass isn't working as our yard is too small and our dog has about ruined the small space. I've been wanting an English Cottage garden but we live in southern California and I need drought tolerant plants. So I've been researching what might work for an English Garden and have found so many that would be pretty. I plan on getting a few plants in the fall and putting them in and hopefully get an outdoor fountain for my birthday next Spring. It's almost as much fun planning a garden as it is getting out there and doing it.

Let me know what plants you decide on, eileen, as that's what I've been building one too. Not easy in NC. A garden is a wonderful thing to look forward to - catalogues are my favorite reading.

For the first garden I've decided on a few plants. I'm getting a climbing rose,
Coreopsis Creme Brule, lemon-rose Geranium, Echinacea - Harvest Moon and Kim's Knee High, Russian Sage, and Delosperma Mesa Verde. That's just for now. I want reds and burgundys, blues and purples, golds and yellows and white~ LOL ~ I guess all colors!

I just realized that a Coreopis Creme Brule will get too big for my garden space so I'll have to find another daisy like plant. Although the Echinacea will make good substitutes.

Planning is always important and you sound like you are on top of things Eileen. Don't you just want to get started right now :)

Hi Frank. I sure do! But until the doctor says I can get out in the garden, I'm behaving myself. But planning is so much fun. I like to photoshop too so I can kind of get an idea of how it might look.

That plan sounds yummy! I plan on a mixed scheme too. I have rose, blue, orange and touches of white so far. Good luck on your birthday next year - a fountain is always beautiful focal point for the garden.

Hi Gardengater. I bought a climbing rose bush over the weekend: a Zephirine Drouhin Antique. What I like is that it tolerates heat, both sun and shade, is resistant to disease, is thornless, and is an antique rose. I'm having hubby plant it in front of a trellis this weekend right next to the porch and I hope I can train it to grow up over the steps along the roofline. I'll put in some ground cover around it. So that's my first cottage plant to go in. I'm going shopping for seeds this weekend, probably California Poppy and Echinecea for now. We have an entire back ledge to plant too but that will be next year's project. My daughter has vonlunteered to paint the steps and glider as they both need it. I may not be able to do the work personally right now but I love the planning and buying plants! Actually, getting someone else to do the hard work isn't such a bad idea!
