Back Surgery

Category: Garden Novice | Posted: Sun May 11, 2008 8:24 pm

I had back surgery a few weeks ago and haven't been able to do much of anything. I'll be out of commission for several months and will miss doing my gardening. For Mother's Day, my daughters are coming over to help with weeding, pruning and general lawn maintenance.

Hi Eileen, welcome back. I hope we can help you to live out your gardening through member experiences here even if you cannot do it physically yourself.

Thanks Frank. It's really hard to look at the yard and not do anything. I do have a question that maybe someone can help me with. I have 6 large white Calla Lillies that have all fallen over. They bloomed and were beautiful but now they're not doing well. They're established plants. My neighbors have the same plants and theirs are still standing and blooming. I'm going to have one of my daughter's stake them up today but I'm wondering what's going on.

Good luck on your recovery. It can't be easy to stay inactive even if you don't want to. You're lucky that your family is close by. I don't know anything about Callas, I hope you find out what's wrong.

Hi there Eileen. I was wondering where you'd gone. It's good of your daughters to lend a hand in the garden when your out of action - mine is good at DIY and fixing cars but is pretty useless when it comes to gardening!! I hope your back isn't giving you too much pain and that it heals well for you. Meantime you can spend some time here looking at everyones piccies and getting ideas for your garden once your fully fit again.
I don't know an awful lot about cannas but could maybe ask your neighbour how she takes care of hers and compare notes? Sometimes it's the simplest of things that can cause flower stalks to droop. I do know that they like to be in full sun if that's any help.

Oh Dear! I'm hoping you heal quickly and without any problems.
Maybe you can go out and at least enjoy your gardens by just looking at them.
