Starting the blog. First a quick introduction. My knick name is Capt Kirk. This is because my last name is Kirkpatrick and it was too long for most of my friends to use. So they called me Kirk and then when Star Trek started on tv, it automatically went to Capt Kirk. This was when I was in the US Navy. I was in for 22 years and retired out in 1983. I am fully retired now.

Hobbies; I like wood working and wood carving. My latest project is a solid wood mofel of HMS Victory from plans. I have been working on it off and on for over a year. I also do some gardening mostly flowers and a few tomatos. I also like to travel and try to do so for a couple of weeks out of the year.
My wife and I have friends that lived beside us in 1969 in Virginia Beach, Virginia and we were all transferred to Brunswick, Maine and then they retired from the Navy and moved back to Georgia. We transferred to Jacksonville, Florida about a year later. We then moved back to central Ohio where I finished up my Navy career as a recruiter in my home town. We have stayed close to them through the years and manage to visit with each other every couple of years. Last month we met them at a State Park in Georgia and spent two weeks with them in their 36 ft. motorhome. This next summer we are planning a month long trip with them through the following states. New York,Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticutt and Pennsylvania.

Gardening; Today I picked about 2 dozen tomatos and that mey be the last of them. With the days getting shorter , it is getting harder for them to ripen. Soon I will have to pull them up as they will stop growing also. They did not do too well this year as we had such a dry summer. And they just don't do as well with water from a hose as they do with water from the sky.

Home; I cut and split more firwood today and am almost done. I have room for about 2 more rows of wood in the wood shed. This year the wood will be more important with the higher energy prices. Our house has electric heat and I have noticed that the cost of electric has gone up in the past couple of months. The wood is free and my energy to cut it is free. I spend about $50 for the gasoline and oil for the tractor, saw and woodsplitter. I normally use the electric heat until Janurary and then use the wood. The weather is normally fairly mild until then and more bitter cold during Jan., Feb. and early March. I have had quite a few of the American Elm that have died from Dutch Elm disease. It seems about when they get between 1 ft and 2 ft. in diameter the disease gets them and they die. I also use wood scraps from my work shop and recycle them in the wood burner.

I went into town to the hospital's exercise center and exercised for 30 minutes. Four years ago I had to have a quadruple bypass done, plus have a pacemaker installed. I did the cardiac rehabilitation and then just kept on doing it. I exercise every Mon, Wed. and Fri. Stopped and had me a cup of coffee on the way home, ran a couple of errands and then came home. My wife went to her mothers for the day and my son who lives with us got up and went to work.
I started cleaning out the chimney, cleaned out the wood burner and had some lunch. Started mowing the yard and also repaired the mailbox post.
Still no rain, but we did have a couple of peaks of sunshine today. And now I am pooped, and in dire need of a nap this afternoon!
