October 13th, American Legion

Category: Daily life. | Posted: Fri Oct 14, 2005 12:29 pm

Being a veteran, I also belong to the local Post of The American Legion. Last night we had one of our two monthly meetings. I am also the post historian and keep the history book of the post up to date. We are currently working on a couple of fund raising programs. One is a Fall Fish Fry which is Oct. 22nd. We serve all you can eat fried fish, baked beans and cole slaw. All that for just $7. We have such a huge turn out, that we normally fry up about 300 pounds of fish. I am one of the cole slaw makers and we fix 40 lbs of cole slaw the day before the event.
We also have a Holiday Craft Show going on Nov. 5th. We raise funds buy selling the booth rentals and of course we sell food such as sandwiches etc. Between these two events, we will raise close to $4000 for the post which will eventually go back into the community.
We purchase and donate flags for the lamp posts in the main streets of town, we support a couple of different veterans related programs and we are the main contributors to the Support Our Troops organization which benefits the parents and wives and families of our troops stationed overseas.
Our post is made up of a fine group of guys and gals with experience from World War II clear up through the War on Terror.

That's great Capt! Feels great to still do your bit for your country I bet. Do you think you could keep some of the fry-up for us here at GardenStew? :)

Is the post historian a hard job, a lot of responsibility?

It was kind of hard to originally get the book up and running. Figureing out how to set it up so it looked nice etc. There were also some minimum standards that had to be met and son on. Once I got all of that done it is pretty simple. I have almost everything set up on computer. I scan the local newspaper for any articles and and pictures pertaining to the Legion and display those in the book. And I take my digital camera to almost all Legion functions so I have pics of those to enter too. And all the members help by collecting things for in it also. So all of our members help. Our Post has over 600 members so that is a lot of help. I normally spend maybe 4 hrs. a month working on it. But I have gotten 2 awards in the past two years for the books. We will probably sell out on the fish! We usually serve 300 pound of fish in 3 hrs.!
