Why are new things so frightening?

Category: Ramblings | Posted: Thu Jan 31, 2008 9:06 pm

When my last mobile phone started throwing tantrums, I rejoiced. Finally I could order that fancy, little thing with a big screen and heat sensitive buttons! But when the thing arrived it looked scary. New, shiny, totally different from my old one and very fancy. Not my style at all, really. So it sat on the shelf for a couple of months (5!) before I started using it. Not from choice, but from need. The old one finally went bananas and blew something.

The new toy took some getting used to, but I thought that as the weeks passed, we'd be fast friends and function well together. After three months I started the count-down for when I could replace it with something tougher, a dust resistant, splash resistant mobile that could survive falling out of my pocket and onto the concrete. And proper buttons with lights, please! Since I'm outside at all hours and the daylight fails fairly early during winter, a lighted display is a must. As for the heat sensitive panel – well, blah! It works beautifully in cozy cafés, but try punching one with a gloved finger. Totally useless, at least to me.

I started searching for a new companion, and discovered that my former favorite manufacturer had stopped producing mobile phones. Oh, the agony I felt! I would have to change make and didn't know which to choose. So I decided to ask my eldest, and she asked some friends on a forum, and came back to me with a few links (23 I think). So I spent a few days sorting through the links. Some were quickly deleted (too expensive, wrong operator, what - rhinestones?), and others saved pending time to really check them.

After careful concideration I discovered that the most likely candidate went for free if I continued my relationship with my operator, so that seemed like a very good deal to me. When the binding time expired, I quickly renewed and opted for my sturdy, water-and-dust-resistant choice. When it arrived, the unopened package sat in the hall for a few days (about a month) before I opened it up to investigate. Yep, it looked good and simple to use, but it was very different from my present one, and a bit scary to start using right away, so I carefully put it back into the box and put the box on the coffee table, just to get used to the idea of switching phones.

I have dusted the box for two months, and finally gotten round to charging the battery. I've carried my new mobile about a bit, but it's so... well, bulky, and a bit heavy too. So I'm still using the fancy thing which I'm not happy with, and trying to muster the courage to let it go. I really don't like it at all, you see. But will I like the new one better? Will somebody please give me a kick and tell me to stop being so stupid?

I could not help reading this blog with a smile on my face. I know that you are describing yourself here, but it could easily be me - also with a mobile phone mind you.
I got a present in last year October that is still in my cupboard - (incidently a 'lovely' cellular phone with camera fucntion and the works, - Me, I am still going along with my old mobile phone (my very first one at that - the only new thing I can handle at the momemnt when it comes to phones was the battery that I replaced.
SO I will not be teh one to tell you that it is stupid. In fact if I do so I would be tellign myself that I am stupid.

People don't like change. I don't like change and never have. You get in a 'rut' or comfort zone, and feel very comfy. If your new phone sat around long enough for you to dust it (I don't like that either), then Droopy maybe you don't need a cell phone! But good luck on whatever you decide to do. After all, decision is one of the biggest hurdles we face!

Droopy, you are most entertaining! get the old(new) sturdy one out and use the blasted thing! It will serve you better! Get your snap and put the pansy away! Happy day, you are a trip!

I've still got my very first mobile 'phone and although it's scraped and scratched it has never let me down. It came as a free offer with Av*n cosmetics. It's very basic, pay as you go, and it makes calls and receives them (that's about as technical as it gets) which suits me just fine.

Open up the new mobile - if you don't look you won't know what it's actualy like. Just think you can finally get rid of the all singing all dancing one you've got at the moment.

Well ya got it, might as well use it. I'm thinking about getting a J*tt*rbug- it's just a plain ol' phone and nothing else, with big, easy to poke with a pencil eraser (my fallback when my hands are grubby) buttons. Thinking about it. Yup. but like you say, it's a change so who knows.

Droopy I have had my current phone for over 4 years now and couldn't even think about replacing it:
http://www.gardenstew.com/blog/e3-26-if-it-aint-broken-dont-fix-it.html

Your mobile phone story reminds me of my beloved laptop that finally got replaced at Xmas with a swanky one bought for me by my family. If it hadn't been a gift situation I doubt I would have replaced it so soon. Bear in mind the screen flickered like a mad thing and would only show if you tilted it at a certain angle, the fan was as loud as a plane, the keyboard was getting sick and it was as slow as Xmas (RAM/processor wise). But I loved it and still do love it dearly as I built GardenStew on it.

Come on now Droopy... Just sit down alone and think about what you do not like about your present fone and see if the new one is an improvement.
Go over in your mind what the things are that are important to you, function wise.
Check out the most basic functions to see if they are easy to do, without reading the instructions.
If it goes well then you have a keeper.
You can see if it will serve you easily within a few clicks. Just keep your investigation basic...
Then get back here and tell how it all went.

lol,, i have to laugh, i have never been that bad, but when i came to norway i had my "american" phone with me, Kolbjørn has the same phone but norwegian. he bought me a new phone but when i charged it an it was all in norwegian i gave him the phone an took his old phone, which i still have 3 yrs later....lol. i carried both phones for the longest time. if the phone rang i would check the phone, look at the american phone for the language translations then answer his old phone, by then the caller has hung up an i have to go back to the american phone, look for translations then go to the norwegian phone an try to figure out the same functions,,, finally i got smart an would wait for the caller to just call back.....lol. ohh well. its not so bad now but i don't know if i can handle a "new norwegian phone".

*lol* Thanks for your support, everybody. It's silly, really, and I'm certain the new phone is far better for me than the fancy thing, but still... I will try to switch this afternoon, promise.

Frank, that old computer of yours deserves to be gold plated and put on a pedestal.

I hope I still have it in 50 years time Droopy. Maybe then I can post a photo of it on GardenStew 2058 and all can laugh at the primitive technology :)

Gee, Frank, in 50 years I'll be 117. Do you think I will remember technology? dooley

I hate change too Droopy, but I've discovered that change is a GOOD thing sometimes.

Change often is a good thing. I just hope Frank will post a photo of the old computer long before the 50 years-mark. I probably won't be around by then.

We don't always like change, but change isn't just a part of life, it's a sign of life. If there were no change, everything would just die. The seasons wouldn't turn, the seeds wouldn't sprout, babies wouldn't grow...Embrace it!
(I don't know if that helps you, but that's what I tell myself when forcing something new on myself)

Well, I'm using the new phone now, and I like it. It's much handier than the fancy thing, it even has a torch feature! I've grouped the numbers and given each group their own ringing tone, so now I can hear if I need to hurry and answer, of if I can ring back later. Lovely stuff!

Lol, Hi Droopy,

I have to chuckle at your blog about the cell phone dilema..... I have a cherry chocolate .... it works perfectly fine. Gllod luck with your choice....
My issue is with dvd players with surround sound..... my hubby bought me (himself)one the other year.. And it automatically made the main tv remote obsolete.....I hate that.
