Border overviews

Category: Garden | Posted: Fri May 02, 2008 2:56 pm

We've got three flower borders that look nice, and three more that look like disaster areas. They're up for a change, and I'm not showing them, but I'd like to share the other ones with the Stewbies.

This is the big border to the west. It currently holds 12 peonies, a multitude of Aquilegia, lilies, primroses, crocus, Arisema, iris and other assorted bulbs and perennials of all sizes and flowering times:

This border is further to the east, but still on the west side of the house. It's two years old and everything in it is still small. The top is the herbs area, but also has a magnolia and a peony. Further down are 14 auriculas. In between we've got sedum, sempervivum, Oxalis and other small alpine perennials. Nearest area has Monarda, Haquetia, lilies, grasses and geranium:

Then it's the south-and-east monster, where the acid soil plants live. We've got roses, peonies, hostas, more hostas, lilies, larkspurs, trilliums, ferns, astilbe, meconopsis, woodland anemone, primroses, rhododendron and some evergreens and more besides.

Starting on the southside:

Looking eastward:

Furthest east:

And looking north:

It looks kind of boring now, with nearly nothing growing, but at least it shows the area we've got to play in. I hope you liked the tour.

Wow, you do have quite a lot of planting areas and plants. And everything is greening up nicely for you too.
Looking forward to seeing the same views when everything has filled in and blooming.

I'll try to remember, toni, thank you. The south-and-east area was lawn when we moved in, but it was in such a dreadful shape that we decided to make it into something we'd enjoy tending. Well, all three borders were lawn once, come to think of it. *lol*

Thanks for another revelation, Droopy. You have some wonderful-looking plots there. I can see how it´s shaping-up for the growth period.
Your areas are really big and quite a challange because of their largness, but you have the gift of imagination and from your deccription it will be a gorgeous thingonce it gets going.
Toni´s right, it would be great to see it once it really starts to flower-up.
Don´t you forget your loyal fans now.

Thanks you kind people you. I haven't been too well for the last couple of years and have had trouble keeping the borders pretty. Hopefully I'll get the north side all done this year. We know what we want there, so it's just getting it done.

Wow it must be a lot of work to keep your beds weeded. I can imagine how beautiful it is all going to be. You sound like you have an artistic eye. I can't wait to see the beds as they fill in. Please keep us updated. Your garden makes me continue the battle of the weeds with hope that it can be done. You are a garden mentor.
