Frosty Winter Blues

Category: Artic Living | Posted: Mon Jan 14, 2008 3:08 pm

Living in the Artic is hard. But you learn to see beauty in everything you look at. I have not seen snow for 2 months now, since November. This is hard for a land that is supposed to be covered in snow. The dark grey, black and browns cover our landscape and make it hard to remember there was once color all over the fields, mountains, marshes and sea.

This is the season of the Blue Time, when the snow covers our land, everything turns blue, cold blue, frosty blue, an every shade of blue inbetween. The snow and the moon is what makes these blues. You see we have the sunrise now, an the sunset, but the sun hasn't crossed the horizon enough to make a huge difference in our light. The moon is up 24 hours a day an that is our main light source. I have taken some pictures today because every waking moment of "daylight" is good for the soul, during this blue time. You know that spring is on its way. Its a long ways off, but it will come, an burst forth all the colors that you can think of, except for blue. So this time is a special time, the blue time, it has its own season, its own time, and its all because the moon gives us this light, during our waking hours, that we are so blessed with the color blue.

We have no snow. I have said that, but in these pictures there is frost. layers an layers of frost. Its the Artic, theres supposed to be frost. Buts its something you can not appriciate unless you walk it an live it everyday. The frozen beauty is breath taking. Like I have said, this is frost in these pictures, not snow.

Here is the sauna, i am facing east, so you can see our winter light,, the moon

The fjørd is frozen over now, from one side to the other, just the beginnings of more ice to come, and ofcourse the frost of the Artic

Our barn shining in the light of day.

Wow, those pictures are wonderful. In #4, there appear to be tiny dots of lights in a couple of windows, is that your town at the base of the mountain or other farms/homes?

Since you have several months of winter left, is there still time for the snow you all need?

Yes we still have time,, thank goodness, we depend on that snow for our water, which is mountain spring water that feeds this farm.

The dots are across the fjørd from us, another farm that is next to our other farm called Selnes. In another month we will be able to walk or ski across the fjørd to it with out fear of cracking the ice.

I'm glad you liked them, the moon will stay out now until the sun decides to come out all the way...lol.

You make living in the arctic sound like something to be desired, even for a frost-bitten, summer hungry southerner like me! Those are beautiful photos. The whole world seems to shimmer somehow.

Pretty pictures Biita. So that is frost? Wow! How cold have the temperatures been for you?

Such wonderful, natural beauty you have all around you Biita. Imagine being able to ski over a fjord - wow!!!!

Droopy, believe me i crave summer an some heat. But the rugged, raw beauty of this place is something i will never get used to or give up. Yep it does shimmer during this time. all day an all night.

Netty the temps here are cold in a way i can't explain. it stays around 32, but there is no cloud cover so any heat we might have is gone as fast as its here. And its so cold it just creeps into you before you even know that you really are cold. Its a different cold than i have felt in the states.

You bet Eileen, thats one of the reasons i been pouting about no snow. is the skiing an winter activity here. I miss it. Night skating or skiing is alot of fun when the only light you have is like that, an you build a big fire down by the sea to keep warm an cook over.....

Absolutely breathtaking.
It seems like I have been transported to another world.
Those pictures are great. I just thought of something - I have never skied and I have never tried skating yet.
Boy I can only imagine the fun you must be having.

Hey, Biita, Those are awesome photos, but I'm still trying to imagine me living there and it's kinda hard. Guess you get used to it. Sure hope you get some more snow.

I am in awe. I have never seen a blue that color, how wonderful it would be to have a piece of satin or silk that shade.
