. . . My Pond Effort & Hens . . .

Category: Gardening 2008 | Posted: Sun Mar 02, 2008 10:00 am

This is a picture of my pond, which I sank a few weeks ago.

Really, I should have dug the hole a bit deeper when I sank the thing but it's too late now; I'm not taking it out again!

It's early days though and I'm hoping that wildlife like frogs and toads will find their way to it throughout spring and summer.

This is a picture of the hen-run, taken from the other side of the field here.

I am very fond of the hens here, this black one here is a leghorn; we have 6 black ones and 3 white and they lay the most gorgeous white eggs; quite big.

This next picture shows some of the other hens grazing

The final picture is of some Maran chicks. This picture was taken several weeks ago and the Marans are now officially called 'pullets' because they've reached sixteen weeks old. This means they will be going to live in the bigger hen-house with the other birds, hopefully not too many feathers will fly whilst they are establishing the new pecking-order.

You pond looks good. Nothing like fresh eggs. Nice flock of chickens you have.

Your pond looks good Sharon.
My DH keeps threatening to get some chickens. I keep telling him that I don't need anything else to take care of (truth is...I could never eat anything I knew personally ;) )
Fresh eggs DO sound good though.

My mother has kept hens all her life. It's always entertaining to watch them go about their business.

Good luck with your pond Sharon, I'm sure it will be a big success!

I like your pond, bet it will be 'hopping' with wildlife by summer.

Your chickens are great looking. We raised some when I was really young, my job was gathering the eggs and I loved it.

I'm sooo envious of that pond. We've had one planned for years, but it's still planned. *lol* I like the hens. We had a few here, but the neighbours went bananas so we gave them away.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your pond. The way I see it, as long as everything is natural, the frogs will come in time. Last year I had about 20 or more and even a few garden snakes that we had to chase away becuase they were after the frogs. I like seeing picts of hens & chicks. We're just inside our county line so we cannot have them. Thanks for sharing.

White eggs - you know I haven't seen a white egg for many, many years. We used to have nothing but white but now they're all brown ones. If you want white ones here you have order them and pay way over the odds for them.

Love the piccies of all you hens and the new chicken run.

Your pond looks great but could I make a suggestion? If you put in some sort of ramp so that any wildlife can get in and out then it would encourage more creatures to move in and stop accidental drownings too.

Now after all that hard work what's your next project going to be. LOL

Gorgeous
I would love to keep hens, but around here that is a big no no. (Living in the city and all)
You sure work a lot, at least the chickens will help fertilizing hehehe.
