The Resurrection of the Purple Rose

Category: My Balcony Garden | Posted: Sun Oct 19, 2008 12:56 am

Long time, no blog (not that I really blogged much before). I moved from Cali to Texas and had to re-establish my "garden".

My garden now includes a lonely purple rose and a fern. Very sad :( That's what happens when your roses die in the move! Next spring I will have more garden babies to blog about :)

I am now on rose plant #3 and have learned a few lessons to date:

1) Do not water at night as they will be prone to mold without the sun to dry them
2) Avoid letting water sit in a metal watering can as that will also promote mold!
3) Mold is bad .. very bad .. and will likely mean that you will have to cut back the whole plant hoping for new growth
4) Do not try to transport roses in the bed of a pickup truck for more than 8 hours. No .. a cardboard shelter will not provide enough protection .. this will completely kill the plant and be very very sad

Lesson for the *imagine a movie preview voice here* MONTH OF OCTOBER:
5) Do NOT overfeed! It might be tempting as they plant gets very happy when it gets its FOOD; HOWEVER if you give it too much (which is really not a lot), all of the leaves will die and your plant will again look very very sad.

Lesson 5 has a happy ending! My Purple rose is coming back :) While she looks like a sad scrapling ready to die, I have new growth and am feeling less bedraggled with my feeding mistake. Purple rose is definitely worth the trouble - she smelled so nice :) I had two really good blooms before I screwed up the fertilizer ..

Glad you are back with us.

I hope you have good luck with your purple rose, as I will anxiously be awaiting pretty pictures of it.
