Shade Garden

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sat Jun 07, 2008 11:04 pm

I finally got the trees eradicated from the shade garden today. This garden has ferns, daylilies, a few roses, peonies (on the edge/gets some direct sun), coneflowers, and others. Now that I've got it all cleaned out of trees, I see some open spots to fill!

That is all so lovely. I like the bridge hidden in there and the water pump.

Do you have a spot for a comfy chair and table to make a shady retreat?

Open spots in a garden - that'll never do!! I'd take Sjoerds advice and get to a garden centre double quick so that you can get them all filled in. LOL Do you have anything in particular in mind that you want to put in now that the trees have gone? Do let us know what you decide on won't you?

Mr. Lincoln is a real beauty!!

I do have my favorite chair by the pond on the patio, and a bench underneath the treehouse. As far as planning goes, I don't do well in that area. Something I don't already have will catch my eye at the nursery (but I tend to have everything they carry locally), perhaps I'll have to shop online. I'll probably divide something, or a neighbor will give me something, and then the spot will get filled!

Great garden! I didn't know that any roses would grow without full sun. There is a pathway across my back yard that gets about 1 hour of direct sunlight late morning. Do you know of any particular rose that may work?

Thanks everyone!

ParlorJazzJim, The two roses in this garden are on the very edge of the garden, so they get ~4 hours full sun per day. A few feet back, the garden gets only dappled sun through the trees the entire day.

If I were to try to grow a rose in a shadier area, I think I'd try something like 'The Fairy' shrub rose. It seems like that one will grow & bloom just about anywhere. Check out this site for more information.
