Tomatoes: The bullies of the garden!
Category: What is with these silly tomatoes? | Posted: Thu Jul 24, 2008 3:22 pm I am quite frustrated by my SIX tomato plants. They are growing so tall and are so heavy that they are actually pulling their trellises out of the ground and smashing my green beans! Why did I plant six tomato plants, you ask? Well, because my husband and I are very amateur gardeners with this being our first year with a garden. We planted four regular tomato plants, one roma plant because that is what we use to make our homemade marinara sauce, and one grape tomato plant because that is what I like on my salad. The funniest thing is, we have tomatoes coming out of our ears, and my husband doesn't even like tomatoes! I have to go out and push the trellises back into the ground each day, and make sure that the bully tomatoes and the cucumber vine are not encroaching on my entire garden. The green beans seem to be holding their own though; we ate the first of them for dinner last night and they were quite delicious. Now we know for next year: Not so many tomatoes, and get the cucumber plant its own planter with some sort of structure for the vine to wind itself around. Live and learn, right? The best thing you can do is cut some of the leaves off your plants. It is make them a lot lighter. A tomato plant only needs 3 leaves to be healthy. I start taking leaves off the bottom. This will also help your fruit grow larger and riped quicker. I have 49 plants in my garden and I have to give them haircuts once a week! At some point, depending on your zone you will want to stop the plants from growing taller, just pinch off the top. Make sure you are fertilizing the plants once a week. have fun. tomatoes are the best!- gardenmama..
I might suggest a bush variety for your cucumbers. They take up less space. I'm thinking of putting tomatoes in 20 gal containers outside the garden perimeters next year as I have little space. The defoliation helps too.
Dray: you could always can the tomatoes. There are many ways to use canned tomatoes. We have over 75 plants. another idea is to tie up tomatoes on a rope so that they can climb up and grow higher if needed. this can be done with your cucs also-let them climb. I'm sure there are some past post you can look at on here.
Those are all great suggestions! Thank you!
Oh dear, we should all have such a problem with tomatoes. LOL Login or register to leave a comment. |
