splitting tomatoes??

Category: tamatoe plants | Posted: Wed Aug 13, 2008 2:24 am

Why do my tomatoes split when they start reddening up? They are unusable, and I am frustrated. I've been waiting 2 months for fresh from the garden tomatoes.

Hi Paulette, welcome to GardenStew.
Why don't you ask this question in the Veg and Fruit Forum.
Many more members will see your question there than will see it in your blog entry and you will be assured of receiving the attention this question deserves....and an answer too.
:)

Sometimes they split because they are growing very fast at that point...some people think that they split when its hot and it rains...

The most common reason is irregular watering.
Sometimes a person gives a bit too much water after their soil has dried-out too much and the result from the pick-up of the water is just too much for them and they split.
...but they are not un useable. you can cut a wedge where the split is and use the rest of the tom in a salad, on a sandwich or boiled to make a concenmtrate for soups or sauces.

This splitting happens to me to some degree every season and I just use them, even if i have to eat them fresh, right out of my hand.
