Mosquito Invasion

Category: Family and Everyday Life | Posted: Mon Nov 06, 2006 1:36 pm

I have never seen the mosquitos this bad. Even the older people are saying this. When we took daily walks in the swamp they did not attack like they are now. No matter what time of the day or night you go out they swarm you by the thousands. I was trying to finish up the grass yesterday and they were attacking me on the riding mower. Usually if any kind of breeze or wind is blowing they go to the woods, not these guys, nothing is deterring them. Of course Mosquito Abatement, which we pay $30 a year for, quite spraying in September. I am calling again today to see if they are going to do something about spraying. They promised us last week, but they never came. We had such a dry summer and wet fall. That is the only reason I can see for them being this bad. I don't want to see a freeze come, but I think that is the only thing that will control them at this point.

Yeah, they're here too. Can't even walk to the mail box without being attacked. The truck was here last week, but they didn't do much good. I think there is just too much standing water in and around abandoned houses.

I know, they are so bad. I worry about west nile virus. I have been bitten a lot in the last couple of weeks.

Get a 4 oz spray bottle, add 3 oz of rubbing alcohol and 1 oz Peppermint Essential Oil. Shake and spray on exposed skin before going out side. Avoid eyes and your mouth. It not only keeps the mosquitos away, it cools you down as the alcohol evaporates. I use it in the everytime I go outside to garden.

They are bad here also.I buy Deep Woods off in a pump spray bottle.Talk about rain .I woke up to the sound of a down pour and thunder.

Thanks for the tip Toni, I will try to get some oil and do it. For now I told Richard to get something with Deet in it. I have some pansies and snapdragons to plant or they will die. I tried to go out a few minutes ago and they covered me with regular insect repellant on.

Sounds like like Turkey nats
try vanilla flavoring and see if that works the ranchers use that that farm or ranch down by the Trinity River.Put in sprayer are just put on as lotion.

Thanks Dooley, I had read the post but the part about the mosquito bites did not register. I will try that.

Another idea that's supposed to deter all biting insects is to use Citronella oil. Insects are supposed to hate the smell of the stuff. Hope something works for you. Do let us know which rememdy you find best won't you?

The Deet works good. I was just out trying to get my pansies, violas, and snapdragons potted before the rain and the skeeters steered clear of me. It is now storming and I didn't get everything done. I would rather something not as strong but it doesn't take much of this stuff and I figure west nile virus would be worse on me.
