I'm Upset

Category: Flowers and Vegetables | Posted: Mon Feb 19, 2007 2:03 am

I started my Sunset Hibiscus seeds, had a really good germination rate going, about 75%, and guess what, they dampened off. I am so upset. I used peat pellet, have never had a problem with them and I would think they would be sterilized. I did not over water them and they had excellent air circulation. Now I have 2 seedlings left, with maybe 2 or 3 more peeking through. I have a few seeds left, but I think I will save them and start over in a couple of weeks. AAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's really depressing when this kind of thing happens for no reason Sharon. Maybe there was something in the peat pellets such as mould spores. I've had this happening to me too and never really did find a reasom for it. It could have been a bad batch of seeds as well. If you've still got the packet take it back to where you got it from because some places will exchange for a fresh pack.

I hate when that happens. Nothing you do seems to help either. I'd be upset too. Try, Try again. Dooley

Oh, I won't give up Dooley. I think I will wait a couple of weeks so I wont' have to be moving them in and out. I have a wire rack which I can cover at night when it is cool. I can get some rack covers at work.

Eileen, these are seeds I ordered, I am going to call the company to see if they have had any problems with them.

Oh No! This is a fear that haunts me until I fall asleep. I hope you can salvage what you can.

Such a shame Sharon, my guess would be it was the seeds as it sounds like you have been very careful with everything else.

Just joined this website. I love growing hibiscus seeds; have had fairly good luck with them. I soak the peat pellets in a weak solution of water and liquid kelp...I use a grow light unit at night and
natural light during the day...cuttings from hibiscus in the summer with weak solution of liquid kelp works
also...I never use Miracle Grow products....plants grow too fast and get spindly...

Thanks for the tips Cannaqueen, I will try the liquid kelp. Why don't you introduce yourself on the forums side so everyone can meet you. We are always glad to have input from new members to help us hone our gardening skills. Welcome aboard.
