warning, sad blog (dog woes)

Category: gardening among the rocks | Posted: Tue Nov 07, 2006 11:10 pm

I thought I was struggling with my dog, Lily, for the past 4 or so years because i couldn't put my kids through losing a dog. She has killed a rabbit (while playing with it), and a chicken (ditto), digs holes in the yard, chases and bites cars (we had to fence in the whole 5 acres because of her), and on and on. And today she tried to take a bite out of me when I was scolding her for yet another hole in the yard. Tomorrow she goes to the shelter. And instead of being relieved, I'm on the verge of crying. I've tried everything within my reach to deal with her. She's got a good heart, but she's the middle and both ends of a bad dog in every other aspect of her life. Believe me, if there were another way, I would have found it by now. I'm just surprised that I'm the one crying.

I don¨t think it's surprising that you cry about it Critter. You seem like a really caring person to me and of course you would be affected by having to give away a pet that you tried so hard to 'fix'. Just know that you did your best and we are not all magicians that can make everything ok. Sometimes we have to let go.

I feel for you some dogs are untrainable and the unforgivable sin is biting you a dog that does that can b e very dangerous it is alwats hard however you have my sympathy

Critter, you did all you could for her. I imagine that relief is behind the need to cry, also sadness for the situation. But you are doing the right thing.
Way too many people are seriously injured by out of control dogs, you certainly do not want one of your kids to be on the receiving end either.

Mary, what you are having to do is necessary, unavoidable and one of the hardest things you will ever do. Please know it is the right thing.

Better safe then sorry Mary because as Toni said you don't want your children being at the wrong end of a dog bite someday. I'm sure the shelter will try their best to rehome Lily.

I'm so sorry to hear about your sadness. We had a dog that was just plain mean after our neighbors 10 yr old and 14 year old would shoot him with a bebe or pellet gun tease him to with sticks through the fence. We would run them off but they came back every chance they got .He got loose from his chain and the 10 yr old came by and he bite him 3 times. We had to have a vet watch him for 10 days even though he had his shots and pay for the hospital bill .we moved him to Fort Worth with us and back here after 2 yrs he finally died of old age but he was never off his chain again .I would never have another bad dog.We didn't put him to sleep because it really wasn't his fault but it did make him mean.
He never tried to bite any of us if he had he would have been done just like you are doing.

Thanks everyone. She's at the shelter now, and I just don't want to be told if they end up putting her down. I paid the fee for that so they won't call or anything. Bottom line, my daughter is developmentally disabled, and I just couldn't risk it anymore. It's just so empty here right now. Gonna go hug a bunny.
