Thinking of Spring

Category: gardening among the rocks | Posted: Sun Feb 11, 2007 1:01 am

Here's more of Max, guess you can tell I'm rather taken with the little fellow, eh?

I was buzzed by honeybees while working out in the yard today. Didn't they read the Almanac? We're having a blizzard before the end of the month! Hmm, maybe that was Washington DC instead of Washington state. Have to double check that. My daffodils up under the bird feeders are popping up like crazy. They are naturalized, not in beds. I like things shaggy like that. On the old family homestead, there is a spot, a clearing in the middle of the cedar, fir, and blackberry, where an amazing clump of daffs come up every spring. Only the bears and bees get to see them, unless one of us remembers in time to go look at them. The house that was there has long since collapsed and returned to the earth from whence it cameth. There's a healthy crop of Morel mushrooms up there too, shhh! Grandma used to go pick them to go with dinner! A few gnarled apple trees, too, varieties that just aren't available anymore. Lots of bear evidence around those trees come fall!

Morel mushrooms are soooooo expensive here. I grew them one year purely by accident. The chipped bark I bought from the Forestry Department must have had the spores in it - lucky me!!!

Max looks as though he wants someone to play ball with him. He's adorable!!

Our daffs are popping up everywhere and they'll soon be flowering. I must admit I love to see them growing in the garden 'as nature intended' instead of in neat rows. They seem to bring sunshine with them into the garden.

Are you training Max to be a football player? He looks ready.
Aren't you fortunate to have daffs naturalized.

Max is so cute. Any idea of his age and breed. I love his coloring.

Max and that ball, inseperable :) Looks like he's trying to move it with the power of his mind.

Mmmmm naturalised daffodils. Daffs should be that way IMO.

From the pic Max looks as if he is Australian Shepherd. Perhaps not 100% but he sure could be. He definately has the has the Aussie look about him. What do you think he is?
I think he is 100% adorable.

I really hope we don't have a blizzard before the month is over! The temps have been so mild. Every spare minute is spent outside. I swear I'll get really mad if we get any measurable white stuff.

Presumably, he's part Sheltie. I honestly don't know. Both my other dogs were aussie shepherd crosses, and quite a bit bigger than Max, so I just don't know.
My crocuses popped up and bloomed today, and my pussywillow is about to burst, too. But you know how Washington can be a tease this time of year!

Hi Critter,
I still think he is part Aussie. The earset the facial colouration and the slightly boxy look of his head lead me this way. I see no Sheltie in him at all. Some Aussies are quite small. The original working Aussies were downright petite in comparison to the oversized overbred show bred dog. The showbred dogs would propably pass out if they had to put in a real day's work! He's still a cutie.

ps did you know that they are breeding King Charles Cavalier Spaniels to small Aussies to achieve a miniature Aussie? Just what the dog world needs.
