My first day on the Gardenstew forum

Category: introducing myself | Posted: Mon Aug 28, 2006 4:14 pm

This is my very first ever blog so I thought I'd just tell a little about myself. I'm from SC, love to garden and have lots of time for it. Hubby and I have just hit the big 50 and are empty nesters, 4 grown children and 4 grandchildren. I'm a stay at home wife and loving it after years of working. I grow a vegetable garden every year and started with plants and flowers about 3 yrs now. We live in the country on my parents old farm. We have 3 acres of gardening space and I try to plant all I can of it. There's a pond too, right outside my back door. I plant water plants in that too. I have 3 miniature pinscher dogs that I consider my babies. Little Bit, Buddy and Repo. I'll try and post pics later of my flowers and dogs.
I've enjoyed reading posts today and posting a few and still reading more. Can't wait to get in here and get to know some of the members. I think I'm going to enjoy GS.

Glad to see your blog starting southern bell, you will find it a great way to communicate with everyone here and the best thing... the comments (like this one) :D

Be sure to spread the word about us if you know others that may be interested. There's enough room in the Stew ;)

You are definately our kind of person SB - you love your gardena and your dogs - what more could we ask for?

We'll have to compare notes on pondplants as I have a fairly large (10 foot round) pond in my garden.

Really looking forward to seeing your three babies and your flowers.

I can relate to hitting the big 50. Today is my husband's 50th and mine was two weeks ago. We don't have children or grandchildren but just recently adopted three "interesting" cats. Looking forward to your pictures.

Good Afternoon Southern Bell,
Hope you have everything you nee to wait out the storm. Be sure sure you have plenty of doggie treats for the babies. If I knew where you would staying I would ship you a bushel of greasy beans and a couple of half runners to string and break for us.

When we finished picking the half runners in the kitchen patch next to the house I was so glad but when I was making the rounds checking to see what if anything needed picking it came as a total shock to find two rows in the big patch that I had over looked before. The seed for those rows were some that a neighbor found in the freezer from when her Dad put out a garden years ago.

I think I will sneak over to my other neighbors and put them on her porch bang on her door and run. She told me last year that she wanted to grow some this year but did not get them planted.
All I can tell her now is she better have a ham bone to cook them with because she will be having them for supper tonight.

She told me that they have canned about 30 qts of the greasy beans that we carried over there so far. I was hoping I would get to see the corn snakes today but no luck.

The Grand Daughter reall enjoyed herself last evening when we were picking the greasy beans. She was on bug patrol and every on she would find she would bring it to me to kill because she does not want them on her beans, She knows the lady bugs along with the wheel bugs are good bugs and will not bother them.

Guess I better hush before I run over the limit of characters.

Have a safe day.
Greasy Bean

I'm a southern gardener too - NC, coastal. We may be growing similar plants and I'd love to know your results. I grow roses (prone to Black Spot), cottage garden flowers like Plox, Salvia, Licorice Plant, Dahlias, Daisies, Lilies, Sunflowers, oh, and Hollyhocks.
Mine's a small garden, but I pack all I can into it.
Good luck with yours this year!
