Rubber Tree care

Category: rubber tree | Posted: Thu Feb 04, 2010 3:29 pm

I inherited a rubber tree plant that is badly in need if pruning, re-rooting and probably re-potting. I've never had a rubber tree before and I don't want to damage it. Any advise and care tips would be appreciated.

Your Ficus elastica (Rubber Plant) wants as much sun as you can supply. Let it dry between watering, and now, in Feb. it does not need much water...Probably don't want to re-pot until spring, but you could add some fresh potting mix to the surface, if it is depleted. I could go on...

Thanks for the information. What about pruning? Is the timing important? and what about where to prune? It really has beautiful, healthy leaves so I'd like to nurture it back to a full plant.

Gosh, you know I have never cut one back! I imagine you could do it, but again, I think I'd wait until Spring. Then you can cut back, re-pot and fertilize. Cutting it back would be the same as with other plants, cutting above the buds. Do you have any photos you could post so I could see it?

I will bring my camera to work and take a photo or two. I think I will move it to another location that gets a bit more sun, too.
